We have finally gotten all but 2 (one location was too muddy still from all the rain and the other is awaiting a fresh coat of paint on the barn before mounting) of our newest quilt blocks up for the year.  It is such a relief to get these painted and hung on their permanent home.  They look great, thanks to the help of my Alliant Energy guys for the great work they have done!

I do believe that the guys from Alliant Energy are my new best friends.  They have graciously helped mount 11 new quilt blocks for us again this year.  Without the use of their boom trucks and equipment, we’d be lost!  Yesterday, July 17, we managed to put up 6 new blocks around the county before the heavy rains set in.  Plans were to have them return again today to put up the final 5, but because the rain was so torrential, power lines, etc. were damaged and Alliant had to take care of that business.  Hopefully they will be back to help on Monday, July 21.  They really seem to make this job look easy!  Here are a couple pictures of the blocks we put up yesterday.  Do you like the new additions to the Barn Quilt Project?  More pictures will come next week after the final 5 are put up!

Feeling the need to get out and take a trip?  The Barn Quilts of Grundy County invites everyone to check out the many quilt blocks that cover many corn cribs, barns and other farm buildings throughout Grundy County, Iowa.  Whether you enjoy quilting or not, the landscape can’t be beat!  Take a tour and visit some of the museums in the communities, go shopping at over 25 specialty and gift shops in the county, enjoy a meal at one of several locally-owned restaurants, bring your bike for the trails, swim at the aquatic centers, and generally have good time here in Grundy County.  If you are not familiar with the area, feel free to call for a FREE self-guided tour CD!  This CD will provide you with a narrative of the history of Grundy County, the painted barns and the farms on which they are located, and the towns you will travel through along the Barn Quilt Loop.  The CD can also be placed in your computer in order to view both present and historical photos of the “original 13” painted barns.  For all the current quilt block locations, a map can be obtained at the Grundy County Welcome Center, Grundy County Development Alliance, many of the county’s specialty shops and the Grundy County Extension office.  Maps are also available on-line at by clicking on the Barn Quilt logo and finding maps on the web page.

For large group tours, please contact the Barn Quilts of Grundy County, at (319) 825-3606 for more information.

With the generous help from the Grundy County Community Foundation, the Barn Quilts of Grundy County was able to give away 9 FREE quilt blocks in 2008.  The locations have been decided and many of the new blocks are already painted, we are just waiting to mount the blocks later this month.  As many of the blocks have been finished, some of the Board members have graciously given their time AND muscle to help move the blocks to their permanent home.
